Please tell us about your role and team at Respond.io?
Respond.io is a Business Messaging platform that connects customers from any channel to every team. Our software allows the customer to unify their conversations be it from sales, support, marketing, or engineering to use it as a tool of communication. My role here as a People & Culture Manager is to oversee the full human resource spectrum from talent management, people development, employee experience & engagement, growing/expanding the company through recruitment while working closely with the leadership team and management ensuring we are able to provide the best opportunity to our people.
What are some of the biggest challenges of being in this role?
The biggest challenge personally for me is continuously planning beyond usual to ensure employees are able to witness and experience a good time working under my care. Apart from that, because I take effort to understand every employee's need differently and try to customize their career development personal to theirs, it's challenging, but it's satisfying. Employees feel heard, they witness the care company shows to them instead of fitting them into a pre-planned career growth that forces them to fit along with everyone in it.
What do you like best about working with people?
I get to make an impact on their lives. Be it, able to employ someone and they are able to sustain their family, be it to grow someone that in the future they succeed well in their career. Or then, simply being the department (People & Culture) that builds good culture and values in the office for the present employees to enjoy their experience here.
Do you have any programs in place to attract new and diverse talent to the organisation?
We indeed do. As we have grown our headcount about 300% in comparison to Y2020, surviving without any programs to attract our talents would be difficult to achieve this growth rate. We have multiple programs which, however, we focus more on the Employee Referral Program. Employees are the best recruiters. They are the brand ambassador of the company. They are the first-hand people that get to be the testimonials of the company's culture and values.
What is leadership lacking in managing multiple generations in the workplace today?
"Their method worked before, should work now too". This is what kills the culture of a workplace and it does not just hinder the growth of the employee but also the company. Different industries, different people, different values. Take time to understand who your people are and how the people work because those are the same people that can take you to where you aspire to go.
What advice can you give for organisations to start doing better in managing multiple generations in the workplace?
Different generations have different ways of work and different needs. Instead of accomodating to each generation differently, focus on creating a unified value and culture that regardless of who you hire and from where they are, they follow the company's way/value of doing things.
