I come from a middle-class family with both working parents. Those were memorable days; we lived with our grandparents and had some of the most interesting conversations with them and my parents. I saw my mother handling everything and acing in it. That was a different time, and house help was not an acceptable option. So, my mother effortlessly took domestic chores, us, and our grandparents along with her career. Her hard work and dedication were infectious, so career became a fundamental requirement rather than a choice. This belief was further rooted after my marriage because my mother-in-law was also a working woman.
I believe that sincerity, hard work, and commitment are essential components of success. There are no shortcuts. These are the habits I still cultivate and teach in my girls. Another thing is keeping the communication channels open. Whether it’s your teammates or your kids, they should always know that they can reach out to you whenever they want. That’s how my mother kept us close to her and I am pursuing the same on my personal and professional front. It has worked pretty well so far.
The key to a successful career and family does not lie in balancing but in integrating the two. When we try to bring a balance between two aspects, we are unconsciously prioritizing one over the other. That’s not healthy. I sit with my complete family for at least one meal per day where we discuss everything right from their school to my workplace. It is the same routine with my team. I love to sit and talk with my teammates and hear them out. I lead some very wonderful leaders under me.
Professionally, I was fortunate enough to work with some of the best leaders. I was inspired by Azim Premji Serge Godin’s leadership style, who sets very high standards for servant leadership.
For women, I think it is the best time to plan a career along with family. Things are improving, though the mindset will take its own time to evolve. The most important part is that we have finally admitted that there is a gender disparity, which is a good point to start. It means we will eventually do something about it and make efforts in the right direction.
If I ever had a superpower for a day, I would want to give equal opportunities to everyone. I think that is the best thing we can do for every man and woman who has dreams and goals. I want every woman out there to dream big and keep working towards it. There will be some setbacks but don’t give up. Keep moving towards your goal, and it will bring you happiness and peace in the end.
