I remember growing up when one day I climbed on a tree and I couldn’t get down. I was very scared and crying. I knew I would get in trouble with my grandparents if they found out, so I faced my fears and jumped on the ground and that made me realize the power of fear.

My father gave me most of the life lessons. I remember, my father always taught me to do “just one more”, which many would call it “kia su” in Chinese. When my teacher used to give me 5 pages to read in homework, my father used to tell me to read 6.

So, I learned to do put a little extra effort into everything. Today, I give my best in everything I do, and it helps me to realize my true potential at work. 

I did not get success easily. I ran my first business for 5 years and then co-founded my second business, which didn’t work well for me. Before starting my third business, I started having some self-doubts. I started being doubtful about my decisions and actions. But I decided to take a risk and started my third business, which I am running successfully today. I am enjoying the second anniversary of my business. It teaches me to believe in myself and to bring better outputs in life. 

Being a woman, I have experienced disparity on the gender front. People do many things unknowingly like sexist jokes on a woman and passing on thoughtless conventional statements like don’t cry like a woman. All these things provoke and promote inequality.

My formula of balancing things in life is learning how to say “NO”. When you are running a business, at times you fail to say no to people and keep working endlessly. I am glad that I learned to say no and take out time for social activities and other things. I owe it to my church friends and members, families, and Tulips Movement for always reminding me about the importance of living and appreciating moments in life. If you ask me to use a superpower for women, I would like to attach an on and off button to every woman. Unlike men, women run their minds 24X7 in balancing everything in their lives and never take a time-out whether they are at work or not. 

Women are working resiliently in every field. They are playing different roles at home and workplace. So, every woman should be proud of everything she’s doing.
