My story of low confidence during growing years and how did I overcome it very strong
As a child, I developed bell's palsy, which led to my lips and cheeks moving away from the normal alignment. It's usually preceded by a high viral fever and doesn't show any particular symptoms as such. But growing up, I was hardly aware of the condition. I dealt with a lot of hurt, shame, disappointments, disapproval, and low self-confidence between the age of 4 to 19 years old. I would always consider myself different from others, treating myself as an outcast, shying from mixing with new people. I also refrained from participating in school programs and class photographs—all of these experiences heavily affected my confidence and studies.
When I reached my degree college, I realised that I need to do well in my academics to better my life. I was fortunate to find a nice buddy around the same time. Her words of validation weaved magic in my mind, something I've never heard anybody telling me before. I realised that nobody was ever really mean to me. Instead, I was the one who held a low perception of myself. But I gathered toughness, confidence, and self-esteem for myself when I learned to look at myself beyond my distorted face, the cause of which wasn't in my hands. This was the turning point in my life.
My Workplace Anxieties:
As I grew up in the small town of Orissa, it was challenging and overwhelming to cope after moving to Coimbatore for my post-graduation. I soon began working, but with no prior knowledge of office work, it was hard for me to adapt to the new work life. However, as time passed, I learnt to manage my job better. I understood that it's essential to always unlearn and learn new ways in life. While it’s important to acknowledge that one may not know something, there is no harm in observing others and seeking help.
Life Incidents That Hit Me Hard emotionally:
While working in one of my employed companies, a huge recruitment scam took place. Even with no fault of mine, I was made the scapegoat of the situation. This was since I was in charge of the recruitment process. It heightened to a point where the CBI questioned my family and me. I have always been a very hardworking and honest officer. But, my image and reputation were boiled down to a corrupt officer due to the scam. I was transferred to another place which I couldn't go to because I had a child. Throughout that phase of my life, I kept praying, wondering what did I ever do wrong to experience this.
Overcoming above Emotional Trauma
Thankfully I found an individual who stepped up to become my co-officer. He was from a different department, yet he decided to help me out. He believed in my honesty and readily volunteered and coordinated with all my proceedings. This helped me come out of the situation. Finally, I quit my organisation and shifted to another one. A few years back, I was called to notify that I was found to be a victim in the case rather than a culprit. My biggest inspiration to overcome my negative thoughts was my daughter.
My Takeaways From Bad Experiences:
It is good to accept dire situations in life instead of living in denial. There is no point in self-blaming; if anything, it only deteriorates the condition further. The next step is to build resilience to jump back to the situation with a fresh and energised mind. One must know to deal with the problem without getting themselves drowned in it. It is also important to surround yourself with those that can provide you with enough knowledge and guide you through it. Always seek emotional support from your family. Lastly, always look out for somebody who can significantly help you to come out of the problem.
Mental Health Of A Working Professional:
Often employees in corporate sectors are unaware of their anxieties and depression. Most of them don't step into office willingly. Performance pressure on employees is a big reason why most of them deal with mental condition. Certain policies and workplace practices like working until a specific time, denial of work from home, juggling work and family responsibilities often cause stress and anxiety for an employee. These often lead to toxic office culture, disturbs the office’s harmony, lowers productivity and engagement, etc., at an organisation level.
Workplace Practices For A Better Employee Mental Health:
Companies must integrate mental and emotional health policies for the betterment of their employees. This could be done by having a counsellor in the workplace, introducing yoga and meditation sessions, training people on how to handle their emotions better, learning to differentiate between personal attacks and genuine feedback, not talking down to people in public, better maternity policies, etc.
Definition Of A Healthy Mind:
When a person can take care of themselves in all aspects, including mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being, this is what a healthy mind stands for me.
